At the age of 17 years old, he immigrated from the Grand Duche of Luxembourg to the United States, without his parents, and entered the St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee. He was fluent in English, German, and French and preached regularly in all three languages. On 25 Feb 1892, he was consecrated Bishop by the Most Rev.
