| Obituary | Eugene Joseph Heying's obituary appeared in the Eugene Joseph Heying, 59, of Granville died Monday, Dec. 19, 1994, at his home near Granville after and eight-monght illness of cancer. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Granville with the Rev. Clem Currans officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Mr. Heying was born Feb. 7, 1935, in rural Festina, the son of Aloysius and Marie (Kuennen) Heying. He moved with his family to the Granville area March 17, 1936. He attended St. Joseph School and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1952. He then attended Loras College. He entered the U.S. Army in May 1954 and served until May 1956, with seven-month service in Japan. He married Mary Ellen Graff July 25, 1955 in Granville. The couple farmed in the Granville area. He was a sales representative for Moorman Feeds and later spent 17 years as a representative for Pioneer Hi Bred International. Mr. Heying served on the Board of Directors of the American State Bank and Farmer's Co-op Oil Co. He also served on St. Joseph's Church parish council and the Spalding Grade School advisory board. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Granville Chamber of Commerce, and the Catholic Order of Foresters for more than 50 years. Survivors include his wife, four daughters and their husbands, Jeanne and Franklin Van Es, Linda and Bob Reichle, Deb and Ron Fischer, all of Alton, cindy and Tim Young of Dallas, Texas; four sons, Randy and his wife, Barb of Alton, Dean and his wife, Melissa of Greensboro, N.C., John of West Des Moines and David of Granville and his fiancee Nicole Harmelink of Alton; 10 grandsons; eight granddaughters; his parents, Al and Marie Heying of Granville; two sisters, Arlene Vortherms and Germaine and her husband Joe Knoz, all of Granville; three brothers, Ken and his wife, Dianne Heying of Sioux City, Leonard Heying of Granville and Steve and his wife, Patti Heying of San Antonio, Texas, and numberous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Erwin Vortherms. Pallbearers will be Vernon Fintel, Marcel Klein, Leon Meis, Bill Penning, Doug Schuber and Darrel Steffes.
